# Schloss Ambras — tickets and prices, the November closure, what the ticket covers in which season, the Kunst- und Wunderkammer, and how to get out to Amras > Schloss Ambras is a Renaissance castle and museum on the south-eastern edge of Innsbruck, in Tyrol, run by the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien. Archduke Ferdinand II rebuilt the medieval castle between 1563 and 1567 and filled it with the collection that is still there: the Kunst- und Wunderkammer, three armouries, the Spanish Hall, the bath of his wife Philippine Welser, the Strasser glass collection and, in summer, the Habsburg Portrait Gallery in the Upper Castle. The castle is closed for the whole of November. A ticket is valid until 17:00 on the day of purchase. - 2026 admission: adult 16 euros online and 18 euros at the door; reduced 12 euros online and 14 at the door; free for everyone under 19, online and at the door. The Habsburg Portrait Gallery in the Upper Castle and the collection of gothic sculpture are open 1 April to 31 October only. The Kunst- und Wunderkammer, the three armouries, the Spanish Hall, the Bath of Philippine Welser and the Strasser glass collection are open whenever the castle is. - The castle's own admission is sold on GetYourGuide as activity 19605 at the same 16 euros the castle's own online shop asks - two euros under the door price - with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. - The Innsbruck Card also includes Ambras admission, once, along with IVB buses and trams, the Sightseer hop-on hop-off bus, the Swarovski shuttle, and one ascent and one descent on the Nordkette and the Patscherkofelbahn. A visitor who buys both the card and the ticket pays for Ambras twice. - Collections: the Kunst- und Wunderkammer, which the castle calls the oldest museum in the world and which English Wikipedia describes as the only Renaissance Kunstkammer preserved at its original location; three armouries, including the Heldenruestkammer built in 1589; the Spanish Hall of 1569-1572, with 27 full-length portraits of Tyrolean rulers; the Bath of Philippine Welser; the Strasser glass collection; and the Habsburg Portrait Gallery, in season. - The castle's own guidance is to allow about two and a half hours. The visit is self-guided; the castle's own public guided tours are in German, children's tours run on Saturdays at 14:30, and an audio guide is sold on site at 5 euros for one person, 7 for two and 9 for a family. - Getting there, as the local sources give it: the Sightseer hop-on hop-off bus passes the castle on its route, which also takes in Bergisel and the Tirol Panorama, and is included in the Innsbruck Card; Postbus line 4134 runs from Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof in about nine minutes; tram 6, the Igler, stops at Tummelplatz, about 400 m away; bus C stops at Luigenstrasse, about 600 m through the grounds; tram 3 to Philippine-Welser-Strasse leaves a walk of about 1.2 km. Lines and stops are the city's to change - check ivb.at on the day. - Parking: Schlossstrasse is a paid zone daily 09:00-19:00, one euro per half hour, capped at about eight euros a day after five hours. - Accessibility: the castle states plainly that it cannot make every part of a historic building barrier-free. Lifts serve the Lower Castle exhibitions, a stair lift reaches the Spanish Hall, and the lavatories in the Upper Castle are barrier-free. The Paradise and medicinal-herb gardens and the gothic sculpture collection have no barrier-free access. - History: a seat of the Counts of Andechs, whose line ended in 1248, after which the property passed to the Counts of Tyrol and then the Habsburgs. Archduke Ferdinand II (1529-1595), sovereign of Tyrol from 1564, had Italian architects rebuild the medieval castle as a Renaissance one between 1563 and 1567, for his wife Philippine Welser (1527-1580), whom he had married secretly. The Spanish Hall was built 1569-1572 and the Heldenruestkammer added in 1589. His son sold the castle to Emperor Rudolf II in 1606; Leopold I moved manuscripts to Vienna, and the remaining collections were taken there in 1805. The castle became a museum in 1880 and is owned today by the Republic of Austria and run by the KHM-Museumsverband. ## The ticket, the card, and which is cheaper Unlike most castles of this size, Ambras sells its own admission through the platform, and at the same figure as its own shop: sixteen euros, against eighteen at the door. So the first decision is not where to buy but whether to buy the ticket at all, because the Innsbruck Card carries Ambras admission too. The card earns its price on a day that also has the Nordkette cable car or the crystal museum in it, and does not on a day whose only museum is this one. The second decision is the season: from 1 November to 31 March the Upper Castle's portrait gallery is shut, and in November the castle is shut altogether, so a winter ticket buys a smaller castle at the same counter. ## Bookable tours listed on this site All booking links are GetYourGuide affiliate links (partner ID 7GG5I5H). It is not: the castle is about 3 km out, on the south-eastern edge of the city at Amras, so every visit needs a bus, a tram or a car - the part most itineraries get wrong. - The castle is open all year. It is not: it closes for the whole of November, and from 1 November to 31 March the Habsburg Portrait Gallery in the Upper Castle and the gothic sculpture collection are closed even while the rest of the castle is open. - Booking online is a way to skip the queue at Ambras. It is not, and this castle does not have the queues of a big-city museum. What buying ahead saves is the two euros between the online price and the price at the door, and it cancels free up to 24 hours before. - You still need a ticket if you hold the Innsbruck Card. You do not: the card carries one Schloss Ambras admission, so buying both means paying for the castle twice. - Ambras holds the Silberne Kapelle.
