Castles near Innsbruck
The short version: Schloss Ambras is the one inside the city, about 3 km from the old town, and it is the only castle I am going to describe here, because it is the only one I have checked properly. What I can give you instead is the list of Innsbruck sights carried by the Innsbruck Card, which is what most people actually mean when they ask this question.

Why this page is short

Tyrol has plenty of castles and I have not stood in most of them with a notebook. Rather than reprint a list of names and opening times I cannot vouch for, I would rather tell you what I do know: Ambras is three kilometres from the old town, open daily from ten to five, shut for the whole of November, and from 1 November to 31 March its Upper Castle portrait gallery is closed while everything else stays open. What is in it.

What the card reaches, since that is the real question

The Innsbruck Card carries one Ambras admission and one visit each to the Goldenes Dachl, the Stadtturm, the Alpenzoo, the Ferdinandeum, the Zeughaus, the Grassmayr bell foundry and Bergisel, along with the IVB network, the Sightseer that passes the castle gate, the Swarovski shuttle and one ascent and descent on the Nordkette and the Patscherkofelbahn. Whether that is worth it is arithmetic, not opinion, and the card page does it in full.

The card that reaches most of them

24, 48 or 72 hours, rated 4.7 from more than 550 ratings, and the reviewers talk about sums: one says the cable car alone paid for it. It carries one Ambras admission, so buying both a card and a castle ticket means paying twice for the same thing.

Frequently asked questions

What castle is near Innsbruck?

Schloss Ambras, about 3 km from the old town on the south-eastern edge of the city, in Amras. Exactly where.

Can you visit Schloss Ambras from Innsbruck in a morning?

Yes. The castle asks for about two and a half hours and the ride out takes minutes rather than an hour by bus or tram.

Are other Tyrolean castles on this site?

No. I write about the one I know, and I would rather say so than fill a page with opening times I have not verified.
