A Renaissance castle three kilometres from the old town with a collection in it that historians argue about: the castle calls the Kunst- und Wunderkammer the oldest museum in the world, and English Wikipedia makes the narrower claim that it is the only Renaissance Kunstkammer preserved at its original location. Christofer from the UK said the staff were friendly and told him what to look out for, which matches my experience of the room attendants here. Swen from Germany, in October, described it as well preserved with a beautiful park. Matthew from Australia gave it four rather than five and called it a relaxing Sunday, with a reasonable amount of time spent, which I think is the most useful sentence in the set: this is an afternoon, not an event. Anyone whose winter visit is built on the portrait gallery, which is shut from 1 November to 31 March, and anyone travelling in November, when the castle is shut altogether. Anyone who needs a guided tour in English should budget for the audio guide, sold on site at five euros for one person, seven for two and nine for a family, because the castle’s own public tours run in German. And anyone for whom stairs are the question should read the castle’s own statement before travelling: it says a historic building of this kind cannot be made barrier-free throughout.
