The split is more interesting than it sounds. The KHM-Museumsverband curates and sells the tickets, which is why an Ambras admission sits inside the same family as the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and why the annual options on the tariff are KHM ones. How it stopped being private
Ferdinand II’s son sold the castle to Emperor Rudolf II in 1606, and it stayed in Habsburg hands. The collections went to Vienna, the last of them in 1805, and the castle opened as a museum in 1880. What you buy a ticket to now is a state museum in a Renaissance castle. The chronology.
