What a Wunderkammer actually was

A sixteenth-century prince collected the world in a room: worked objects and natural ones together, the made and the grown, arranged so that a visitor could walk the whole of creation in an afternoon. Ferdinand II, sovereign of Tyrol from 1564, did it here and did it more thoroughly than most. What survives at Ambras is not a reconstruction of that idea in a modern gallery. It is the idea, in the building it was made for. How Ferdinand came to be at Ambras at all.

The claim, and the careful version of it

The castle’s own material says the oldest museum in the world. English Wikipedia says something narrower and easier to defend: that this is the only Renaissance Kunstkammer preserved at its original location, because the comparable collections at Munich, Prague, Stuttgart, Dresden and Kassel were plundered or broken up. Those are two different statements and I am not going to pretend one settles the other. Both claims, side by side.

The strong claim is the castle’s. The careful one is Wikipedia’s. Ambras is remarkable on either reading.

The Strasser glass

The Strasser glass collection sits within the same visit and is easy to walk past on the way to the armouries. Do not. It is the sort of material that rewards standing still, and the room is rarely crowded because most visitors are already thinking about the Spanish Hall. The full route, in visit order.

Why it carries a winter visit

From 1 November to 31 March the Habsburg Portrait Gallery is closed, while the Kunst- und Wunderkammer, the three armouries, the Spanish Hall, the Bath of Philippine Welser and the Strasser glass stay open. Same ticket, same counter, smaller castle. The gothic sculpture collection keeps that same April-to-October season, and needs no museum ticket either way. So the Kunstkammer is the answer to the question a December visitor should be asking, which is whether there is enough left to justify the trip out to Amras. There is, and it is the best thing in the building. Nicolas from the UK visited in December, called it a very nice castle and said the audio guide was worth getting, which is the recommendation that comes up most often in winter reviews. Book the ticket that opens these cabinets

One admission covers the Kunstkammer, the armouries, the Spanish Hall, the bath and the glass, and the Upper Castle between April and October. It is the castle’s own ticket at its own online figure, around sixteen euros, two euros below the price at the door, cancellable free up to 24 hours before.
