Where is Schloss Ambras?

Where is it?
The short version: in Austria. The castle stands at Schlossstrasse 20, 6020 Innsbruck, in Tyrol, about 3 km from the old town on the south-eastern edge of the city, in the district of Amras. It is inside Innsbruck rather than out in the mountains, which surprises people who have only seen the photographs.

On the map

South-eastern edge of Innsbruck, above the district of Amras, on a slope with the park below it. Three kilometres from the old town means a short ride rather than an excursion: the Sightseer bus stops at the gate, Postbus 4134 comes out from the Hauptbahnhof in about nine minutes, and trams 3 and 6 and bus C stop between 400 m and 1.2 km away. Each route, with the distances the local sources give.

What is there when you arrive

A Lower Castle holding the Kunst- und Wunderkammer, three armouries, the Spanish Hall, the Bath of Philippine Welser and the Strasser glass; an Upper Castle with the Habsburg Portrait Gallery, open April to October; and a park with two gardens. What to see, in visit order.
