Schloss Ambras opening hours

Opening hours
The short version: the castle opens daily, 10:00 to 17:00, and it is shut for the whole of November. From 1 November to 31 March the Habsburg Portrait Gallery is closed, while the Kunst- und Wunderkammer, the three armouries, the Spanish Hall, the Bath of Philippine Welser and the Strasser glass stay open. Same ticket, same counter, smaller castle. The gothic sculpture collection keeps that same April-to-October season, and needs no museum ticket either way. A ticket is valid until 17:00 on the day you buy it. I would still read the hours off schlossambras-innsbruck.at for the date you are actually travelling.

The hours themselves

Ten until five, every day the castle is open, with no seasonal shuffling of the clock. That is unusually simple for a castle of this size, and it is also the whole reason the calendar below deserves your attention instead: at Ambras the month decides far more than the hour does.

November, when there is nothing to visit

The castle closes for the entire month. Not a weekday pattern, not mornings only, not a short maintenance week. The whole of November. I have watched people walk up the drive in the second week of the month because a hotel concierge told them the castle never closes, and there is nothing at the top of it but a gate. If your Innsbruck days fall in November, plan the day around something else and come back for this one. Which month to pick.

The winter half of the year, when the castle is smaller

This is the part nobody warns visitors about, and it is the reason I keep this site. Somebody who flies in for the December markets and goes out to Ambras for the two hundred Habsburg portraits finds a locked door at the Upper Castle and no refund, because nothing was sold wrongly. The ticket was always the same ticket. What changed was the castle behind it. Room by room, and which rooms are open when.

Worth knowing

If you are coming between December and March, come for the Kunst- und Wunderkammer and the armouries, which are the strongest rooms in the building and open in every season the castle is. Come for the portrait gallery and you want a date between April and October. What is in the chamber of wonders.

What the ticket does with your day

Admission is valid until 17:00 on the day of purchase, which means the ticket is a day rather than a slot: leave for lunch in Amras, walk the park, come back for the Spanish Hall in the afternoon light. The castle’s own guidance is to allow about two and a half hours inside, and that is honest rather than generous. What the ticket covers in full.

Two things are worth knowing before you arrive rather than after. The castle’s own public guided tours run in German, and the children’s tours run Saturdays at 14:30, also in German. An audio guide in other languages is sold on site, at five euros for one person, seven for two and nine for a family, and it is the single most common thing reviewers say they were glad they paid for.

Fix the date, keep the option open

The castle sells its own admission through the platform at the same figure its own shop asks, around sixteen euros, which is two euros under the price at the door, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before. There is no queue at Ambras to beat; the reason to book is the two euros and the freedom to change your mind about the weather.
